Sparks - how do they work?

I went to "Sparks" and tried putting in a few interests.

Like "Kittens".

First two headlines:

Man suspected of poisoning kittens with antifreeze

Kitten tests positive for rabies; health dept. sends out alert

Soooo I think I'm going to hold off on that feature until I've read a bit more of the documentation.

Yeah, my search attempts were either so vague ("social media") as to be overwhelming, or with such specific terminology ("cycle chic") that anything it found, I'd already subscribed to the blog's RSS feed (or rejected the given blog as boring). I wish G+ wasn't just searching for the exact terms in question in the given article, and that it would be a bit more contextual (if I'm interested in kittens, I would think the most likely reason someone would put kittens as an interest would be because they want to see cute pictures of kittens).
