I participated a small amount in a bit of the name/nym discussion on a post. This is one of the discussions in which we had privileged white men going all that real names were good, and about five minutes into my discussion, I found that I was getting an error -- my profile had been reported, and apparently suspended. There are people like that out there.

If you're using a pseudonym be careful of taking part in any public discussion, whatsoever.

And I thought I was being too paranoid when I didn't feel comfortable commenting in name/nym discussion outside of my fandom circle!

I'm considering making a 'proper sounding real name' google id and inviting it to plus to make the arguments I want to make in those fora without risking the meaningful id. Which is kind of hilarious and kind of sad.

I'd like to interact with all the interesting online people I know without outing myself in various ways to the offline people I know; I might have to create something similar.

i know several people who've done the same (and really, i'd suspect that many of the oh so proper "real names" folks have done the same in the past, since i know a many people who use their real names online most of the time. funny how the real name supporters over there don't seem to be mentioning that, though...

Yeah, sucks but not surprising.

In a lot of those threads, sympathetic Google employees have been encouraging people who don't like their policies to "Give feedback!" I almost clicked the button but then I thought, "Why draw attention to the fact that I'm one of those weird pseudonymous people?"

Which means my views are not being spread which means they won't know they're pissing off all the pseudonymous users. *sigh*

(And the people who don't like that policy tend not to like the public gender policy, either. So we get screwed on that, too.)

Report feedback has nothing to do with the profile name enforcement.

Is feedback annonymous?

Not sure, but I would err on the side of saying probably not.

Then you can't say there's no danger in giving feedback with a pseudonymous user name.

Okay, maybe they're run by different groups, but surely there's some communication and what's to prevent the name enforcement people from looking at the feedback?

Because of the fact that they are different sets of people, and because of the fact that doing name enforcement requires already having a complaint filed. Unless you're suggesting that names enforcement people will look at the separate feedback stream (when they're supposed to be busy working on complaints), go look up profiles, file complaints against them, and then mark the profiles suspended. I very much doubt people will be that malicious and motivated.

I suppose it's a risk, but it's not that big a risk IMHO.

OMG. SO sorry!

I will give feedback specifically on the subject that people are doing this and thus silencing the pseudonymous.

i've sent feedback on the issue; i'm privileged to be able to use my real name online without worries, but i have a 20 year background online in communities for abuse survivors, those of us who are non-binary gendered and/or trans, non-judeo christian; i know people who've never used their real names online but are still active online and i wnat to know whether they'll be welcome on google+ before inviting them.

as to whether i'll actually get a response,t hat's anyone's guess.
