This is a really great community, and I love the fact that already G+ seems like it might be a place, unlike facebook, where rl and fanninsh groupings can be managed semi-separately. I'm not sure if invites have been opened up again, but if they have, does someone have one they could give me? Thanks so much.

As a non-FB user who is nonetheless thinking of moving into more real-life connectivity, does anyone know enough yet about G+ to compare it with Facebook? Obviously, FB has all these millions of users to connect with (and games and suchlike) which G+ wouldn't at first, but other than that? Does it seem safer, give me more control over my data, anything like that?

I'm curious what other folks are thinking, who are already in G+. I've posted my initial thoughts from a more-or-less fannish perspective at http://elke-tanzer.dreamwidth.org/1078966.html.

Please comment here in [community profile] googleplus with links to your thinky posts!

Also, if anyone's having trouble figuring out things on G+, we can use this comm to help each other figure things out, yes? I'm starting to feel pretty comfy with its current features, myself.

Hello [community profile] googleplus! [personal profile] elke_tanzer suggested prepping for Google+ by, among other things, tidying up contacts, and I've got some questions about that.

Gmail and Google Contacts have become my world since I got an Android phone. Gmail stores the address of everyone I've ever contacted as a Contact--right?

So Contacts and my phone share a list that includes my dentist and my bike mechanic and the one-time customer service contact at BuyCoolStuffHere.com.

I can see deleting that last contact, but I don't want to tidy away my dentist or my mechanic, if you see what I mean. And now (because I just got into Google+ via the loophole--whee!), I'm faced with this massive list of semi-relevant contacts, many of whom I don't want to share with socially, but whom I'd like to keep in my "address book" and not just delete for the sake of my G+ privacy.

How does that work? Does this question make sense? I'm in the fog!

Thanks!

I'm just brainstorming here... what else am I forgetting? (I mean, aside from non-Google-related things!)

- in Gmail, go to Mail Settings, then the Themes tab, and select one of the two new themes which are a preview of the new Gmail look. They're called 'Preview' and 'Preview (Dense)'.
- check out the new Google Calendar look and feel (which goes right along with the new Gmail previews)
- tidy up your Gmail contacts and groups
- create or update your public Google Profile via https://profiles.google.com/
- watch the Google+ demo at http://www.google.com/+/demo/
- if you've got an Android-based phone, download the Google+ App via http://www.google.com/mobile/+/
- customize your Google News preferences
- tidy up your iGoogle settings, gadgets and feeds
- tidy up your Google Reader feeds
- tidy up your Picasa albums
- tidy up your Bookmarks

(While you're at it, if you haven't already decided what you're going to do about the status of your delicious.com bookmarks, figure it out and do it. The June/July AVOS transition is upon us, apparently.)

I've spotted a few indications in various news articles and blogposts that folks who have a "strong social graph" and/or have completed Google Profiles and/or have diverse Gmail Contact lists and/or have many people in their Gmail Contact list who are already in Google+... may be getting priority for entrance. I'm not sure if I believe any of that or not. But I do know that at least for me personally, if my Contacts are a mess to start with, then building my social circles in Google+ is going to be more annoying than if my Contacts are at least slightly organized.

What else are you doing while you wait to get into Google+ ?

(ETA a day later: I'm in!)

I went to "Sparks" and tried putting in a few interests.

Like "Kittens".

First two headlines:

Man suspected of poisoning kittens with antifreeze
Lincoln Journal Star - 1:09 PM

Kitten tests positive for rabies; health dept. sends out alert
NorthJersey.com - 3:32 AM

Soooo I think I'm going to hold off on that feature until I've read a bit more of the documentation.

This is a central post for people who have Google+ accounts to link up. Feel free to comment, preferably with your Google+ profile link. Anonymous comments are enabled, so if you want google+ friends without linking your DW name directly to your Google name -- if, for example, your Google+ profile lists your RL name and your DW account lists an online identity and you don't want to explicitly link the two -- go ahead and comment anonymously.

This is a community for people interested in Google+, which is currently in "limited Field Trial". You do not have to be a current member of g+ to participate in the community; this is as much for spreading information as anything else.

Feel free to post an introduction, or to comment on the Google+ Identities post.
